Strandholm Havanese Guardian Program is a temporary joint-custody program. It is an affordable way to have one of our cream of the crop dogs for your family. Strandholm Havanese remains principled, in that every one of our dogs is born to be loved by a special family.
We take the heart of the Strandholm Havanese breeding program seriously. Our breeding dogs are first and foremost, beloved pets in family homes. As such, we partner with great guardian families during our dogs’ breeding years. When our breeding dogs retire from breeding, they continue to do what they’ve always done – live a wonderful life with their forever families.
For those interested in becoming a guardian family we ask that you begin by filling out an application. Once your application has been approved we ask for a $300 deposit to hold your spot on the Guardian Family waitlist. When the puppy or dog is ready to come to your home, the deposit is returned and the entire puppy price is waived for you! That’s right, you will receive one of our cream of the crop breeding dogs with the puppy/adult dog price waived!
We retain ownership and breeding rights until the dog retires from breeding and then ownership papers are transferred over to you. We pay for all breeding related health testing and all breeding expenses. The dog’s normal expenses as a pet are paid by you, the host family. When breeding obligations are fulfilled, the dog will be spayed or neutered.
The dog must be kept healthy, on prescription heart worm meds, flea treatments, be up-to-date on vaccinations and kept well-groomed.
Strandholm Havanese asks you to be able to provide the following:
- Ownership of your own home
- Obedience classes for a puppy
- To have or become established with a veterinarian
- Keep up with normal grooming such as haircuts, nail trimming, teeth cleaning, etc.
- Feed a breeder-approved food
- Notify us immediately when a female begins her heat cycle
- Never to allow a Strandholm Havanese breeding dog exposure to any other mating situation
- Be within a couple of hours of the Strandholm Havanese location
- Relinquish the dog during the time we need the dog for breeding and whelping
- Provide regular responsible pet vet care at your expense, including shots, heart worm, and flea medicine
