What size are the Havanese?

They are 8-12” tall at the shoulders, weighing 7-13 pounds.

How are they with children?

Havanese are excellent with children and become devoted to their families. They are happy, outgoing, kind, charming, affectionate, playful, smart, gentle and responsive. They are small but sturdy. Havanese are specifically bred to be great companions.

How are they with other dogs and people?

Havanese are social, outgoing and cheerful. It is against their nature to bark at or charge other dogs and people.

Are they suitable for small living spaces such as a condo, apartment or dorm?

Yes! They are quiet and do well in both small and larger living spaces.

Are they yappy?

No. Havanese will alert you to something they feel you need to know about, but being peaceful dogs quickly quiet down.

Are they suitable for Therapy? Agility? Obedience? 

They are excellent candidates for these activities.

Are they hypo-allergenic or non-shedding?

They are as hypo-allergenic as any dog can be and they are low to non-shedding.

Do they drool?

No.

Do they need to be groomed? If so, how often?

They need to be groomed, preferably brushed daily and groomed every 6-8 weeks.

What type of furstyle do they have?

That is the fun thing about Havanese! They can go with a long show dog look, a really cool dreadlock style, a glam look complete with bows and updos of all sorts, a short 1” puppy cut and – probably the cutest – a 3” all around cut, making them little fluffballs, irresistible to hug! This is probably the most comfortable cut for them as well.

Is there a purpose to their silky coat?

The coat of the Havanese for protection, long, silky and seemingly warm, but the long coat is actually there to protect from the sun and overheating.

How much exercise do they require?

Havanese are happy with a 20-30 minute walk daily.

What kind of food do they require?

The ideal ratios for a Havanese are 30% protein and 20% fat from a high quality dog food. Read the labels as this percentage is not common. They only require between ½ cup to 1 cup per day.

What is their life expectancy?

Their life expectancy is between 10-14 years with proper care.

Do you do health testing on the parent dogs?

Yes! Our dogs are health tested and certified with OFA

Do you recommend pet insurance?

Definitely know your options. Compare the risk versus the cost of insurance. Each family must decide what is right for their situation.

Do you ship?

We may be able to help you arrange for an in cabin flight nanny. Normally, however, all of our puppies and adult dogs must be picked up in-person at either the Columbia Metropolitan Airport or our home in Irmo, SC. We can also make arrangements to meet you in person at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport for an additional fee of $500.
